Philippians 1.
1 Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus,
to everyone in Philippi made holy in Christ Jesus, together with the masters and servants:
2 Grace to you, and peace, from our Father God and Master Christ Jesus.
3 I praise my God every time I remember you,
4 every time, in every one of my prayer requests, for all of you.
I make my requests with joy 5 over the relationship
you’ve had with the gospel from the first day to now.
6 I’m convinced of this: that the Beginner of the good work among you
will work on it right up to the day Christ Jesus returns.
7 It’s appropriate of me to think so: I have you in my heart,
and in my chains, in the defense and establishment of the gospel,
you share a relationship with me in every grace.
8 God is my witness how much I want all of you in Christ Jesus’s heart.
9 I pray for this: that your love may be more and more overabundant
in everything you know and perceive.
10 As you go through life, when you’re tested for impurities,
may none be found—nothing offensive on the Christ’s day,
11 for you’ve been made full of right fruit through Christ Jesus.
Praise and glory to God!
12 Fellow Christians, I want you to know what’s happening to me
is making more progress for the gospel.
13 Everyone, including the whole Praetorium, knows my chains have to do with Christ.
14 Many of the fellow Christians, convinced by my chains,
are fearlessly venturing to speak the word even more.
15 True, some do so out of envy and quarrelsomeness.
Others proclaim Christ in good pleasure.
16 Some out of love, knowing I’m on the rack in defense of the gospel;
17 some out of intrigue, proclaiming Christ not for pure reasons,
but figuring it’ll increase the pressure on my chains.
18 And so what? Either way, in every way,
whether pretext, whether truth, Christ is proclaimed. In this, I rejoice.
I’ll also rejoice 19 because I’ve known that what I’m going through
will result in my freedom, thanks to your prayer requests,
and the ministry of the Spirit of Christ Jesus,
20 just as I’ve eagerly anticipated and hoped:
Nothing will come back to embarrass me, but in boldness as always,
I will lift up Christ in my body—either because I get to live, or I get to die.
21 See, to me, Christ is life, and profit is death.
22 If life, in a body, this means work—and fruit.
So, which is better? I don’t know. 23 I’m confronted with the two.
The desire to be set free and be with Christ is much stronger.
24 Staying in the body may be necessary because of you,
25 and being persuaded of this, I knew I would stay,
and stay with you in your progress and joy of faith.
26 Thus your boast might be the overabundance of Christ Jesus in me—
through my return to you.
27 Participate in the world only in a manner worthy of Christ’s gospel.
Thus, whether I came to see you, or whether I hear about you while away,
you all stay standing in the one Spirit, working together in one life,
trusting the gospel, 28 unafraid of any of your opponents.
Whatever “evidence” they find is destruction for them—and salvation for you.
This is from God, 29 so he can do great things for the Christians—
not just the believers, but those who suffer 30 the same trials you’re experiencing,
like you saw me experience, like you hear I’m currently going through.
Philippians 2.
1 If any of you are into Christian encouragement,
loving advice, spiritual fellowship, or other sympathetic things,
2 fill me with joy: Think alike. Have the same love.
In thinking, act like you’re one soul.
3 Nobody act out of cliquishness or because you know it all,
but despite your weakness, lead those who are doing better than you.
4 Don’t just focus on your own thing; look out for other people’s things.
5 Among yourselves, think the way Christ Jesus did.
6 Existing in God’s form,
he figured being the same as God wasn’t something to clutch,
7 but poured himself into a slave’s form:
He took on a human likeness.
8 He was born; he was found human in every way.
Being obedient, he humbled himself to death: Death by crucifixion.
9 So God exalted him. He gave him the name over every name.
10 In the name of Jesus, every knee may bend—heavenly, earthly, and underworldly—
11 every tongue confess Christ Jesus is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
14 Do everything without grumbling nor backtalk
15 so you can be faultless, clean, blameless children of God.
In the middle of a crooked, twisted generation,
you shine like the brightest lights in the world.
