2 Samuel.

2 Samuel KWL.

2 Samuel 5.

2Sa 5.18-21
Baalism: The icky religions we find in ancient Israel.
18 Philistines came, and occupied the valley of Refahím/“Shadows.”
19 Asking the LORD, David said, “Do I go out against the Philistines? Do you put them in my hand?”
The LORD told David, “Go out: I put, put the Philistines in your hand.”
20 David went to Baal Perachím. There, David struck them down. He said:
“The LORD broke through my enemies before my face, like water breaks through a levee.”
Hence this place’s name is Baal Perachím/“Lord of Breakthrough.”
21 The Philistines left their carved idols there,
and David and his men took them away.

2 Samuel 7.

2Sa 7.1-7
Sometimes prophecy encourages. Sometimes not.
1 When the king sat in his house, and the LORD gave him rest
from everything round him, from all his enemies,
2 the king told the prophet Nathan, “Now look: I sit in a cedar house.
God’s ark sits in the middle of curtains.”
3 Nathan told the king, “Go do everything you have in mind:
The LORD is with you.”
4 When it was night, the LORD’s word came to speak to Nathan:
“Go tell my slave David the LORD says this: You want to build me a house to sit in?
6 From the day I brought Israel’s children out of Egypt to this day,
I haven’t sat in a house; I travel with a tent, a tabernacle.
7 All the places I’ve traveled, with all Israel’s children,
I never told a single one of Israel’s princes, whom I commanded to pastor my people Israel,
‘Why don’t you build me a cedar house?’”

11 […] “The LORD declares to you:
The LORD will make you a house.
12 When your days are complete, when you lie at rest with your ancestors,
I’ll raise up your seed after you, one who’ll come out of your innards.
I’ll set up his kingdom. 13 He’ll build a house for my name.
14 I’ll be a father to him. He’ll be a son to me.
When he goes wrong, I’ll correct him with the scepter of men, with the whips of men’s sons.
15 My love won’t turn away from him like I turned it away from Saul,
whom I turned away from your presence.
16 Your house has been set up. Your kingdom is forever in my presence.
Your throne will be set up forever.”

2Sa 7.18-20

18 King David came and sat before the LORD’s presence
and said, “What am I, my Lord YHWH?
What’s my family, that you’ve brought me to this?
19 This is so small to your eye, my Lord YHWH.
You speak of your slave’s house lasting for ages,
as a lesson for humanity, my Lord YHWH.
20 What more can David say to you?
You know your servant, my Lord YHWH.”

2 Samuel 10.

2Sa 10.1-4:
Don’t mess with our Messiah.
1 This happened afterwards: Benei-Ammon’s king died. His son Khanún was made king after him.
2 David said, “I’ll show love to Khanún ben Nakhaš, like his father showed love to me.”
David sent gifts in his slaves’ hands, to comfort Khanún about his father.
David’s slaves came to the land of Benei-Ammon.
3 Benei-Ammon’s chiefs told their master Khanún,
Is David honoring your father in your eyes, because he sent you comforters?
Isn’t David sending slaves to you an excuse to check out the city, to spy, to overthrow it?”
4 Khanún took David’s slaves and shaved half their beards.
He cut off half their kilts at their buttocks, and sent them back.
