9 This happened when they crossed the river:
Elijah told Elisha, “Ask me to do for you, before I’m taken from you.”
Elisha said, “Please assign the double portion of your spirit to me.”
10 Elijah said, “You ask for a serious burden.
If you see me get taken from you, it’s yours.
If not, it’s not.”
2 Kings 4.
1 A woman, one of the women from the “prophets’ children,” called out to Elisha,
saying, “Your servant, my husband, died.
You know your servant respected the LORD.
A creditor came to take my two children as slaves.”
2 Elisha told her, “What can I do for you? Tell me what you have in your house.”
She said, “Your maidservant has nothing in all my house but a pot of oil.”
3 Elisha told her, “Ask for containers from all your neighbors outside.
Empty containers. Not little ones.
4 Come inside; shut the door behind you and your children.
Pour oil into all these containers. Set them aside when full.”
5 The woman left Elisha and shut the door behind her and her children.
They brought her containers, and she poured the oil.
6 The containers were filled. She told her children, “Bring me more containers.”
They told her, “There are no more containers.” And the oil stopped.
7 She came to tell Elisha the God’s-man. He told her, “Go.
Sell the oil. Pay the debt. You and your children live on what’s left.”
2 Kings 5.
9 Nahamán came with his chariot and horses, and stood at the door of Elisha’s house.
10 Elisha sent an agent to tell him, “Go wash seven times in the Jordan.
Your flesh will return to you, and be clean.”
11 Nahamán was angry and left.
He said, “Look, I told myself, ‘He’ll come out, come out;
he’ll stand, he’ll call his LORD God’s name,
he’ll wave his hand over the infected place, he’ll cure the infection.’
12 Aren’t Damascus’s rivers—Barada and Awaj—better than all the water in Israel?
Can’t I wash in them and be clean?” Angrily, he turned to go.
13 Nahamán’s slaves approached and spoke to him.
They said, “Father, the prophet spoke a great word to you.
Why not do it? All he told you is, ‘Wash. Be clean.’”
14 Nahamán went down and immersed himself seven times in the Jordan,
following the God’s-man’s word.
His flesh returned, like flesh of a young boy, and he was clean.
2 Kings 17
7 This was because Israel’s sons sinned against their god, the LORD.
He’d brought them out of Egypt’s territory, out from under the hand of the Pharaoh (Egypt’s king).
They’d feared other gods. 8 They’d walked by pagans’ rules.
The LORD dispossessed them as Israel’s sons watched, yet that’s what Israel’s kings still did.
9 And Israel’s sons secretly followed teachings which weren’t consistent with their LORD God:
They built sacred sites for themselves in every one of their towns, from watchtowers to major cities.
10 They set up phalluses and orgy-groves on every high hill, under every green tree.
11 They sacrificed there, at every sacred site, like the pagans whom they watched the LORD drive out.
They followed evil teachings, and angered the LORD.
12 They served idols, about which the LORD said, “Don’t make them.”
13 The LORD warned Israel and Judah by the hand of every prophet and seer,
saying, “Come back from your evil ways.
Guard my commands, my inscriptions, all the Law which I commanded your ancestors,
which I sent you by the hand of my servants the prophets.”
14 But they wouldn’t hear it. They were stiff-necked,
like the necks of their ancestors who didn’t trust their LORD God.
15 They rejected his rules, his relationship he “cut” with their ancestors,
the testimonies he warned them of.
They followed silly things, and became as empty as the pagans which surrounded them,
about whom the LORD commanded, “Don’t do as they do.”
16 They abandoned every command of their LORD God.
They made two metal statues of calves, made orgy-groves,
worshiped every heavenly warrior, served Baal.
17 They put their sons and daughters through Molech’s fire. They practiced augury and hydromancy.
They sold themselves to do evil in the LORD’s eyes, to anger him.
18 The LORD was very angry with Israel, and turned them away from his presence.
Nothing was left—except only the tribe of Judah.
19 But even Judah didn’t keep the commands of their LORD God.
They followed the inscriptions which Israel had.
20 The LORD rejected all the seed of Israel.
In response, he gave them into the hand of plunderers till they were thrown away from his presence.
24 Assyria’s king brought people from Babylon, Kutha, Imma, Hama, and Sippara.
He set them in the Samarian cities, instead of Israel’s sons.
They possessed Samaria, and lived in its cities.
25 At first, when they lived there, they didn’t fear the LORD.
The LORD sent them lions, which were killing them.
26 They told Assyria’s king, “The gentiles you exiled to live in the Samarian cities
don’t know the laws of the land’s god.
This god sent lions to kill those who don’t know the laws of the land’s god.”
27 Assyria’s king said, “Send one of the priests you exiled from there.
He’ll go live there, and show them the land’s god’s laws.”
28 One of the priests exiled from Samaria came to live in Beth El.
He was teaching them how to fear the LORD,
29 but each gentile made their old gods, to house in the shrines the new Samarians made,
each gentile in the cities where they lived.
30 Those from Babylon made Benót of Sukkot.
Those from Kutha made Nergal.
Those from Imma made Ashima.
31 Those from Hama made Nivkhaz and Tartaq.
Those from Sippara burned their children in fire to Sippara’s gods, King Adram and King Anam.
32 They feared the LORD: They made their leaders shrine-priests,
who served them in shrine-houses, 33 and feared the LORD—
and also served their old gods,
and served the laws of the nations they were exiled from.
34 To this day they follow their old laws. They don’t really fear the LORD.
No one follows his orders nor laws,
the commands the LORD commanded the sons of Israel, whom he renamed Israel.
